Wheel of Time Series Will Be Completed

In September, I passed along word that Robert Jordan, author of the Wheel of Time series of books, had passed away.

At that time, there was an outstanding question of whether the series, started in 1990 and already 11 books and maybe 7000-ish pages long, would be completed. Robert Jordan was working on the series-finishing 12th book when he passed.

SciFi.com has an article that sheds some light on the situation:

Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson has been selected to complete A Memory of Light, the final volume in best-selling author Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time sequence, which was left incomplete at the time of Jordon’s death in September, publisher Tor announced.[...]

Harriet Popham Rigney, Jordan’s widow and editor, chose Sanderson to finish the book, which will be written based on notes and scenes left by Jordan. “He left copious notes and hours of audio recordings,” Rigney said in a statement.

Robert Jordan Passes Away

Robert Jordan (actually, James Rigney, Jr.), author of one of my favorite series of fiction books, the Wheel of Time series, passed away Sunday from complications from cardiac amyloidosis.

I heard about it through the grapevine. Jordan’s Wikipedia entry has been updated to show him as recently deceased, and details are reportedly posted to his blog at Dragonmount.com, which seems to be slashdotted at the moment.

Sadly, the final book in the series, A Memory of Light, scheduled for release in 2009, is reported to not have been completed. (The groan you may have heard Sunday evening, was not only one of sympathy for Jordan’s family, but was also the collective reaction of some fans who have been waiting nearly two decades for some loose ends in the series to be wrapped up.) Apparently, as his health failed, Jordan left notes on how to finish the book with those closest to him, although there’s no decision yet as to whether the book will actually be completed.
