Actuarial Musings

You know, I have a really weird collection of interests.

You see, I flew to Seattle today to attend a conference this week.  This is my first trip to Seattle…or Washington State.   So, I’m not only picking up two counties (King, plus a ferry ride to Kitsap), but this is the first new state I’ve picked up in (I think) 10 years.

I’m running out of states to collect!  (I tried my darndest to get to Oregon this trip, but corporate travel policies and train schedules won’t permit.)

Of course, this means that we need more states….and that lead, in my poor, somewhat deranged mind, to another thought:

With Dems having done so well this election cycle…I wonder if there will be a ramp-up in efforts to grant statehood to the District of Columbia, or to get Puerto Rico to vote for statehood.

When Every Delegate Matters

2008 Elections

When every delegate matters, apparently the coveting of Puerto Rican delegates leads to issues pertaining to the commonwealth becoming primary campaign issues.

Seen in the Wall Street Journal’s Washington Wire blog:

Today, Hillary Clinton released a policy agenda to put more policemen in Puerto Rico, bring universal health care to the island, create new jobs and work to have the federal government give up land on Vieques island, where the Navy formerly operated a bombing range. Her plan today is also designed to lift the cap on Medicaid there, and to extend President Bush’s latest budget proposal to include aid to Puerto Ricans.

Minimum Education Standards for Congresscritters

8 February 2008 · Comments Off

Congress

A few days ago, I called for a minimum education requirement for finance reporters in the media. Perhaps I need to issue a similar call for congresscritters. From an Orlando Sentinel blog:

A week ago, [Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL)] sent out a press release about the economic-stimulus package pending in Congress. She said the package shouldn’t give $600-per-person checks to residents of Puerto Rico and Guam.

“I do not believe American taxpayer funds should be sent to foreign citizens who do not pay taxes,” Brown-Waite said.

Since then, outraged Puerto Ricans—U.S. citizens since 1917—and Guamanians—citizens since 1950—have demanded an apology.
