MassPike Looks at Toll Hikes and Expansions

I know that folks in Western Massachusetts just love the idea that they may have to start paying tolls on the MassPike again, thanks to some bad investments.

Seen in the Boston Herald:

The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority yesterday began mulling new tolls on portions of Interstate 93, hiking tolls on the western Pike and reinstating charges at exits 1 through 6 to help rescue the agency’s ailing finances and to eliminate inequities.[...]

Turnpike Executive Director Alan LeBovidge said yesterday that finances took another negative turn after State Street Bank pulled out of a deal to help rescue the Pike from a pair of souring derivative transactions.

The Pike is currently losing $336,000 a month because of high interest charges, and faces losses of more than $850,000 a month in July unless it can reach an agreement to refinance its debt. State Street had been in talks with the Turnpike to re-issue $127 million in debt, but the bank decided Friday to pull its line of credit, officials said.

MassPike Toll Hikes In the Works

Toll Roads

It looks like my commute into Boston may be a bit more expensive soon. Seen at Toll Roads News:

The five member board of the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority voted this morning for toll increases that will raise 15% more revenue on the Boston area portion of the Turnpike, taking toll takings on the three toll tunnels and the Turnpike east of MA128/I-95 from $152m now to $175m, a Turnpike spokesman told us. The proposal has to go to public hearings for comment and then he confirmed - or not - at a subsequent meeting of the board.

The toll increases being adopted are:

- car transponder tolls 75ยข to $1.00 at the two Turnpike toll plazas at Allston and Weston with cash tolls going up from $1.00 to $1.25

- car tunnel tolls going up from $2.50 to $3.00 with transponders and from $3,00 to $3.50 for cash

Tolls for larger vehicles are slated for proportionally similar hikes, and apparently hikes are not being recommended for the Pike outside Route 128. The latter of those avoids a political firestorm from western and central Mass folks who are still peeved at tolls on their primary east-west highway being used for Boston’s benefit.
