Interchanges

Sadly, roadgeek-oriented information about Rio is somewhat lacking.   So, unfortunately, I probably don’t appreciate the significance of this week’s highway feature.  But hey, it looked interesting, and that’s good enough for me.  :)

Highway Feature of the Week: Rodovia dos Imigrantes (SP-160) outside São Paulo, Brasil

Bridges

We go to Brazil this week:

(View in Google Maps)

This is a section of SP-160, the Rodovia dos Imigrantes (”Immigrants Highway”), a toll expressway connecting São Paulo with the Atlantic coastal cities of São Vicente and Praia Grande, descending 800 meters in elevation down the Serra do Mar in the process.

Due to the volume of beach-bound traffic, the route can be converted into a one-way expressway (with traffic seeking to go the other way relegated to the older Rodovia Anchieta).

The particular stretch shown above is one of the crossover points of the two carriageways, as they snake around the escarpment, making use of 44 viaducts, 7 bridges, and 11 tunnels for the 59km route.

Brazil Finds Oil (Therefore God Must Be Brazilian)

Energy

Seen on the newswire:

“This discovery… proves that God is Brazilian,” he said during a speech at his presidential palace in the capital Brasilia.

His theological assertion is not original: Brazilians have long claimed that God shares their nationality on the basis of the natural resources at their disposal.[...]

Brazil’s government and the state-run oil company Petrobras announced two weeks ago that exploration of its Tupi offshore field showed it had enough to increase national oil reserves by 50 percent.

I wonder how they’re going with getting the Vatican relocated to Brasilia.
