The Ancestor of Teenaged Roadgeekery

29 September 2008 · No Comments

Maps

As a teen, one of the ways I killed time with my very first PC (a 14-pound XT-class laptop) was to fire up Word Perfect and put together strip maps for upcoming roadtrips.

(Yes, I have always been a little odd.  Why do you ask?)

It seems that I may have had a rather remarkable predecessor in such an endeavor.   From Ananova:

1403361

The Plus Fours Routefinder was designed to be worn on the wrist - relying on good old-fashioned paper maps wound around wooden rollers, which the driver turned en route.[…]

The device was intended to allow drivers to navigate around the UK, but with so few cars on the roads it never really took off.

Osama Bin Laden’s Hideout Revealed

Maps

It seems that Osama has been in hiding at Barad-dûr.

A post on a mailing list I follow directed my attention to an article at the PakTribune:

wana-tribesmen

[S]ources said that all arrangements had been finalised for a massive offensive against the militants hiding in the Mehsud-populated areas of South Waziristan and in this regard thousands of fresh Pakistan Army contingents were taken to Razmak in North Waziristan who, at any time, could enter the nearby Makin area.

According to military spokesman Maj Gen Athar Abbas, from 50 to 60 militants were killed near Ladha Fort while 20 to 30 militants were killed in fighting near Chagmalai. Maj Gen Abbas said dozens of militants moved to Ladha Fort at 10 am on Friday and attacked the military base. Only small arms and rockets were used in the attack, he added.

I did not create the map, I swear. :)

Hi-Res Maps of Antarctica Released

30 November 2007 · Comments Off

Maps

An article I saw at NationalGeographic.com appealed to my childhood fascination with Antarctica:

A thousand images from NASA’s Landsat satellite data, taken mostly between 1999 and 2001, were pieced together to create a first true-color map with ten times greater resolution than previous images of Antarctica.

The map is so detailed it includes features that are as small as half the size of a basketball court.

The maps, covering Antarctica down to about 82.5° South (Landsat’s orbit apparently doesn’t permit imaging within 7.5° of the poles), are reportedly available at the USGS, and the imagery is fascinating. (However, when I revisited the site while drafting this post, the server seemed unwilling to display the interactive map.)

Using Satellite Photos to Document Genocide

12 June 2007 · Comments Off

Technology

This past weekend, the Washington Post ran an article describing how human rights groups are documenting atrocities by using satellite imagery:

The catalyst is a partnership between Amnesty and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) that’s pioneering a new kind of human rights observation: the use of high-resolution satellite imagery—commercially available only since 2001—to document atrocities in areas made inaccessible to watchdog groups. The unusual collaboration started about a year ago, with test projects looking at Zimbabwe and Lebanon. The Darfur effort is by far their biggest yet, and the most politically significant.

Sample imagery is here if you desire to see before/after images of burned out villages.
