Where am I?

On The Iowa Ruling

Marriage / Family

You’ve probably already heard by now that the Iowa Supreme Court ruled Friday to overturn the restriction of marriage to opposite gender couples.  Quoting the Des Moines Register:

Iowa Supreme Court justices ruled unanimously that Iowa Code section 595.2(1) is unconstitutional. The one-sentence law, passed in 1998, declares that “only a marriage between a male and [...]

Is Momentum Building To Take Government Out of the Marriage Business?

Marriage / Family

Over the weekend, I noted that a petition effort is now underway to get an initiative on the ballot in California to abolish the civil institution of marriage, and officially recognize only civil unions, circumventing much of the fuss over the social/religious issue of same-gender marriage.

Yesterday I stumbled across an article at Time which almost [...]

California Ballot Initiative to Abolish Marriage

Marriage / Family

Longtime readers of my blog are probably aware that I’m of the opinion that the fairest way to resolve the same-gender marriage “issue” would be for government to get out of the marriage business.  After all, if you believe that marriage is a religious sacrament….well, it’s rather arrogant for a government to attempt to impose [...]

Chop Suey for a Friday

News From Connecticut

I’ve been busy and have once again accumulated a pile of articles worth mentioning without having the time to go into much detail.

Business Insurance has an article summarizing a recent Hewitt study, reporting that 19% of all employers are planning to eliminate employee health benefits over the next 3-5 years.  It’s not clear from the [...]

Massachusetts Same-Gender Married Couple Sue for Federal Recognition

Litigation

Via the New York Times:

The legal advocacy group that successfully argued for sex-same marriage in Massachusetts intends to file suit here on Tuesday seeking some federal benefits for spouses in such marriages.[…]

The plaintiffs in the suit include eight couples and three widowers, all of whom were married in Massachusetts after the state began allowing same-sex [...]

Quote du Jour on Same-Gender Marriage/Prop 8

Marriage / Family

Alan Stewart Carl at Donklephant observed:

I don’t believe Prop. 8 passed because a majority of the people hate homosexuals or refuse to tolerate them. I think it passed because a significant number of the population didn’t “buy” that gay marriage is a civil rights issues.

The proposition had nothing to do with granting homosexuals voting rights, [...]

LDS Church Faces Backlash Over Support of Prop 8

Church / State

To opponents of California Proposition 8, it seems that quite a bit of blame for passage of the Proposition is being placed on the efforts of the Church of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) in campaigning against the measure.

Thus, there is some backlash.

Seen on the newswires:

Utah’s growing tourism industry and the star-studded Sundance Film Festival [...]

California Proposition 8 to Lead to New Lawsuit

Litigation

ACLU press release (emphasis added):

The American Civil Liberties Union, Lambda Legal and the National Center for Lesbian Rights filed a writ petition before the California Supreme Court today urging the court to invalidate Proposition 8 if it passes. The petition charges that Proposition 8 is invalid because the initiative process was improperly used in an [...]

Fallout From Proposition 8’s Passage Emerges

Marriage / Family

Although Prop 8 opponents still hold some hope in the absentee and provisional ballots, it looks like there is some pretty quick reaction to California voters’ apparent decision to amend the state constitution and ban same-gender marriages.

Seen at Wilshire and Washington:

Los Angeles County officials have stopped issuing licenses for same-sex weddings.

The county Registrar made the [...]

Initiatives

2008 Elections

I’m poking around some of the stats on various initiatives around the country.   A few interesting ones to me:

California Measure 8 (same-sex marriage ban) has been called to pass.  (Note to same-gender couples, Connecticut would now love to host your weddings.)
California Measure 11 (redistricting reform) has also been called [...]
