Isn’t The Friday Before Labor Day Supposed to be Quiet and Uneventful?

Usually, I’d expect the Friday before Labor Day to be a rather dull, uneventful day.  Lots of folks are out on vacation, or are scooting out early to maximize the three-day weekend goodness.  Us corporate types take advantage of the lull to relax a little before planning season hits full force.

That doesn’t seem to be the case.

For me personally, it was a busy day because shortly after I passed along the comment about a G4 having flown Anchorage-to-Ohio last night, I had to pop down to the courthouse for a hearing on my wife’s and my long-simmering lawsuit against the guy who disabled her several years ago.

The hearing and its aftermath were…eventful.

So, I missed the formal announcement of Palin, and all the initial reaction to the announcement.   It’s probably a good thing that I missed the fuss, because I have a general sense that it took a few hours for pundits professional and amateur to figure out who the heck she is, and/or to memorize a hastily assembled set of talking points.

My own initial reaction – I admire McCain’s chutzpah for making the unexpected choice.  She should bolster McCain’s weakness with wage-earning America and ease some angst among social conservatives, but at the expense of diluting McCain’s best argument against Obama – inexperience.

Adding a social conservative to the GOP ticket doesn’t make me feel any more comfortable with McCain, although I do appreciate the sign that McCain’s his own man, and isn’t too beholden to the pachyderm herd.

And, we now know that, barring tragedy or a sudden mass-conversion of Americans to libertarianism, the top of the executive branch won’t be the sole domain of white men as of next January.
