I was “socially awkward” in high school. (Heck, I still am.) One of the way that awkwardness manifested was that I never quite got all the hoopla over prom at my high school. It seemed like a tremendous waste of money and an awful lot of fuss…and it still seems that way to me.
So, my heart was warmed when I encountered this comment, relayed in a Wall Street Journal article (subscriber link) last week on the emergence of proms in the U.K.:
Mr. Haigh wrote an article criticizing prom excess for an education Web site, where other teachers also posted complaints. "Ghastly import. Conspicuous consumption and pointless excess," read one posting.
