Kentucky Lawmaker Seeks to Ban Anonymity

I think a clue-by-four needs to be wielded in Lexington.

As seen at WTVQ:

Kentucky Representative Tim Couch filed a bill this week to make anonymous posting online illegal.

The bill would require anyone who contributes to a website to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that site.[...]

If the bill becomes law, the website operator would have to pay if someone was allowed to post anonymously on their site. The fine would be five-hundred dollars for a first offense and one-thousand dollars for each offense after that.

The bill is, ostensibly, to stop cyber-bullying…although the deluge of hate speech that is likely to be directed at Mr. Couch from the blogosphere is likely to give him another reason or two to seek the bill. (If it did become law, little indie sites like this one would have to likely shut down comments in order to comply.)

This is most likely just one of those weird little bills that gets introduced into every state legislature, usually to die a silent death without serious consideration. Therefore it’s unlikely to be anything to worry much about.

Besides, it would be possible to enforce, unless Kentucky legislators chose to erect the Big Bluegrass Bit Blockade to keep those evil anonymous net.trolls away from the delicate sensibilities of Kentuckians.
