Accessing the MIB

Accessing the MIB

[Tommie Lee Jones & Will Smith in Men in Black] I (and about a billion other people) have mentioned the importance of pulling your own credit report periodically, to protect yourself from identity theft and to be well-informed in the event that you need to open a new credit account.

Some of you may also be aware of the ability to pull your own CLUE report periodically to confirm what the insurance industry knows about your past auto or homeowners insurance claims history.

However, I’m disappointed to admit that I had never thought about the ability to do the same from the MIB — the Medical Information Bureau — to see what health and life insurers know about your past health history.   Via WiseBread:

The good news is that since the file is about you, you have full access to it! Once/year, you can order a free copy of your MIB records, and if you plan to apply for insurance, it is a good idea. It gives you a chance to see what is on your file and dispute any inaccurate information.

For more information, you can call MIB at 1-866-692-6901, visit their site here, or contact them by snail mail (required for disputes) at MIB Inc, PO Box 105, Essex Station, Boston MA, 2112.
