QandO points to a press release from Lakota Freedom which announces an event Wednesday in which the Lakota Sioux will reclaim their independence:
WHAT: A Historic Event between the Lakota Sioux Indians and the United States Government: Press Conference Announcing Unilateral Withdrawal of Lakota Nation From All U.S. Treaties and Return to Independence.[...]
SUMMARY: For far too long our people have suffered at the hands of the colonial apartheid system imposed on the Lakota Sioux. Our treaties with the United States government are nothing more than worthless words on worthless paper – repeatedly violated in order to steal our culture, our land and our ability to maintain our way of life.[...]
We have no choice but to take this historic action to protect our people and our way of life, and reclaim our freedom from the colonial systems of the United States Government. So we travel to Washington D.C. to withdraw from our treaties with the United States and announce full return of our sovereign status under Article 6 of the U.S. Constitution, International and Natural Law.
The current administration has a certain…nack for ignoring laws it doesn’t want to be bound by. Somehow, I think this will be rather easy for Bush to ignore.
QandO observes:
They’re just now figuring out the treaties are worthless?
In fairness to the Lakota activists, presumably about the time they first reached that realization, the U.S. military would have had an unfortunate tendency to invade tribal lands, shooting first and asking questions later.
Perhaps now, with the military so occupied in Iraq and Afghanistan, they have less of a fear of immediate invasion.

Your past will help guide your future. Your great chiefs would be proud of your division from the US government. Hopefully they recognise your rights to freedom. I hope more tribes will follow you toward freedom .

A landlocked country full of drunks and casinos..What a good time! Will their casino’s still take dollars or should I bring Buffalo hides and beaver pelts? Maybe, if we wait until the peyote wears off then they will come to their senses. I think the Indian revolt should be crushed. Where is General Crook when you need him? He would dispatch these savages with great prejudice. This might actually be a wonderful idea. Let ‘em do it and embargo trade of any kind with their azzes. Then they might figure out which *** the milk comes from !

People around the globe recognizes the rights and sovereignity of the Indians. Only the colonizer americans don’t. This may sound like a futile exercise in the ocean of american lies, but to the whole world, it’s truth is plain and clear.

Spoken like a true white man and i do not mean that as a compliment. I think this is the greatest thing the Indian Nation has ever tried to do. Finally to reclaim their heritage, their land and their dignity from the ones who stole it. My husbands Great-Grandmother died on the Trail of Tears.

Geez, James, bitter much??
Timing aside, this may just be a move to draw attention to the FACT that treaties were signed and summarilly dismissed by the US gov’t. The logistics of withdrwal from the treaties would be huge…what would the caucasians do? Can they imagine being 2nd class citizen on what they have come to consider “their land”?? I don’t see a chance in hell that this will work out for the natives, but I’d like to apply for a passport anyway…:)

James, you just don’t understand. They’re going to hire us white honkies to drive the tractors, wash the casino dishes, run errands and allow us to play their slot machines. But, really, they’re smarter than that. They will seek needed info and expertise from any source that can help them solve problems and enhance the lives of their people and reclaim traditional values and practices. And, James, when climate change really hits and energy depletion takes its toll on our ability to provide food the new agribusiness way, you’ll again be happy the Indians may be willing to show us their ancient, tried survival techniques
James, the Indians aren’t dumb, they were just too trusting, and the whites, regardless of religious guidelines and restrictions, out propogated the Indians. Same thing happening in Israel today. Palestinians are better at love-making than the Zionists are. If the Zionists formed one state that included Palestinians, there would be no Jewish State. Too bad Jews are such elitists. At least the Indians aren’t going to build mamoth walls (that we pay for) around their nation to keep people out. Why the Zionists chose to die slowly is beyond me.
James, why are you afraid to allow Indians to have their own nation? They haven’t been included in ours, except when we need cheap labor or live bodies in the military. And, James, maybe you just need to do a little reading. Start, that is START, with Stannard’s “The American Holocaust”.
