Port Authority Considering Raising Tolls on Hudson River Crossings

Seen in the New York Times:

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could raise tolls by one-third on its Hudson River crossings as early as next year, according to a high-ranking agency official.

Tolls to cross the George Washington Bridge and the Lincoln and Holland tunnels would increase to $8, from $6 now, during peak hours. The fare increase proposal will be taken up at the Port Authority’s next board meeting, on Nov. 15, after the legislative elections in New Jersey next week, according to The Star-Ledger of Newark.

While declining to discuss the specifics of news report, a spokesman for the Port Authority said the agency already signaled that it would raise tolls to help pay for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center and upgrades to parts of its transportation network.

I know many folks who think the six dollar toll is already nuts (although the article notes that the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels operate in the red, offset by profit from the GWB), but eight dollars? It’s no wonder that the New Jersey Transit trains into the City are packed.
