Congress Considering Dropping the Five-Year Expiration of the No-Call List

Seen on the AP wire:

At separate House and Senate committee sessions, lawmakers passed legislation that makes most of the 145 million phone numbers on the list permanent by eliminating a five-year expiration date established by the Federal Trade Commission, which administers the program.

With the five-year anniversary of the national Do Not Call list coming, I think this is a good thing.

The five-year expiration period struck me as a necessary evil to get the the enabling legislation through Congress, given the influence of marketers’ lobbyists.   True, a point could be raised about do-n0t-call registrations becoming stale as folks move/change services and numbers getting reassigned.  However, I don’t think I’ve met too many folks who sincerely want telemarketing calls…except perhaps the minority of folks who like to give telemarketers a hard time.
