Today’s Dem Debate

19 August 2007 · No Comments

My project at work and running errands ahead of vacation next week caused me to miss this morning’s debate. I did however catch a few snippets here and there on the POTUS ‘08 rebroadcasts on XM while out and about, and I can share a few thoughts:

  • My mostly apolitical wife humored me and let me listen to part of a rebroadcast while she was in the car with me. Upon hearing Kucinich on some point or another, her response was, “this guy’s running for president?” (said in a “is he nuts?” kind of tone).

  • I’m pleased that most of the bits I caught focused on subjects other than Iraq. In particular, I found the discussion on education and No Child Left Behind interesting.

Note to candidates: The correct answer is to retool NCLB, not to scap it entirely. Measuring efficacy of spending is a financially wise thing to do, although the idea of allowing educators and the community to define the metrics is potentially reasonable. There’s nothing wrong with the concept of merit/performance-based pay, although my limited experience with teachers unions make it difficult for me to imagine their cooperation in any effective system.

  • I think Dodd is getting tired of his limited airtime:
