I know that I’ve taken a bit of flack on a couple of blogs for not being in love with Ron Paul. Perhaps more heretically, I’m not in love with Ron even though I consider myself somewhat libertarian.
I’m not the only person not in love with Ron. NeoMugwump writes:
I don’t get it. People are going gaga over a man who basically wants the United States out of the UN and NATO, has condemned the 9/11 Commission and wants another one, waxes on about a “North American Union,” and has said not so kind things about African Americans and Jews.
I’m sorry, but someone who goes around saying that only five percent of African Americans have “sensible political views” and assumes 95% of black males in Washington, DC are criminals or semi-criminal is not someone that I think will revive the GOP.
Of course, part of the confusion is that Ron is Republican due to the impotence of the Libertarian Party. Ron’s not a centrist-leaning pachyderm; he’s a big-ell Libertarian.
I respect the guy for trying to preach the gospel of a non-invasive government among GOP crowds in this era of authoritarian big-spending Republicanism. I just wish the gospel could be delivered by someone who would come off as, well, not a nut among mainstream Americans.
Nuttiness and a lack of realism is why I am not a fan of the Libertarian Party, even though in theory there’s significant overlap between their core political principles and mine.

Who cares if he comes off like a nut? He’s the closest thing to Libertarian out there who has a shocking amount of grassroots support. No one agrees with anyone on everything. Hell, I don’t agree with myself on everything. But he’s a good honest man who loves liberty. That’s enough for me.
