State Farm Offers to Reconsider Mississippi Claims

State Farm Offers to Reconsider Mississippi Claims

12 April 2007 · No Comments

The Mississippi State Farm settlement appears to be moving ahead. From the Wall Street Journal (subscriber link):

State Farm said Thursday that policy holders whose homes were reduced to their foundations, or slabs, will be the first to get letters, which will be mailed Friday. Other policyholders in the three coastal Mississippi counties will receive their letters by the end of April. Even policyholders who didn’t make a claim will be offered a chance to have their hurricane damage reviewed, the company said.

The letters are the result of an agreement brokered by George Dale, Mississippi’s insurance commissioner, and agreed to by State Farm last month after a federal judge held up a similar proposed class-action settlement for the same customers.

Given that the relevant court has indicated that State Farm bears the burden of proof in wind versus water claims, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if more than a few of these folks receive increased settlements.
