Tennessee Looks at Managing Red Light Cameras

It looks like I’m not alone at being concerned with the idea of red light cameras at intersections where the yellow light is a bit too short. From the Commercial Appeal:

The use of cameras by Germantown, Knoxville and other Tennessee cities to ticket motorists who run red lights has come under attack in the legislature, with some lawmakers contending the system is designed to raise money rather than promote safety.[...]

First, House bill 698 mandates that the yellow, or caution, light be set to last for 5 seconds at all intersections where cameras are posted.

Another portion of McCord’s bill would forbid local governments from contracting with private companies to operate red light camera systems.
