Ethanol to be Featured in State of the Union Speech

I had a bit of dejà vú upon encountering this article at the Sydney Morning Herald:

George Bush’s annual State of the Union speech to Congress next week is likely to call for a huge increase in US ethanol use and tweak climate change policy while stopping short of mandatory emissions caps, sources familiar with White House plans say.

Wasn’t there a push for alternative energy in last year’s speech, which quickly fell flat on its face? I certainly seem to remember something to that effect having been said last year.

The teaser about climate change being part of the speech is intriguing. To date it’s seemed that the administration has been extremely resistant to even acknowledge the possibility that there could be a problem with climate change. If there’s even a slight shift in that position, I’ll be amazed.

Despite my lack of fondness for Bush, I am looking forward to hearing his speech next week. He has tossed out some good ideas in the past. Granted, they all seem to vanish from the landscape within days of the speech…but for a few hours there’s fodder for interesting contemplation.
