(Via Connecticut Local Politics) According to NBC 30, there is yet another call to add/reinstate tolls on some Connecticut highways:
The Transportation Strategy Board issued its report on Friday and calls for legislation to pay for a comprehensive review and analysis of electronic tolls and congestion pricing.[...]
The board said that without some new source of revenue, Connecticut will be unable to pay for numerous highway projects on the drawing board.
Expansion of I-95 east of Branford, extending Route 11 from its current terminus in Salem and connecting it to Interstates 95 and 395, and expanding Interstate 84 west of Waterbury are projected to total $ 6 billion.
If the tolls were set up to be purely electronic (i.e. no toll-booths; simply devices at the entrance/exit ramps to read EZPasses and to photograph license plates of non-EZPass users), I’d certainly favor the idea rather than face increased taxes.
However, if the state were going to toll I-95, I’d suggest that I-84 also be tolled. It’s already frequently congested between Manchester and Waterbury, and that situation would only worsen if it starts drawing traffic avoiding the 95 tolls.
