More Voting From Beyond The Grave

From the Voting in Memphis blog:

When I awoke this morning, I looked through the results of my program and found a webpage with a voter’s name (Ira Cummings, a male, white, dob of 8/21/1922) which indicated they were deceased as of 2003. I contacted the home of the deceased person in order to verify that he truly was deceased and spoke with the widow.

Mr. Cummings is indeed dead, and a vote was recorded for him in early voting in this election. However, before we assume anything sinister, it should be noted that the blog says that his widow says she voted early, yet no record of her voting appears, suggesting this is just a clerical error.

I’m of the opinion that if an honest effort is to be made to clean up the voter registration system in the country, one ought to start with a massive purge-and-reregister effort.

(A better solution would actually be to run two registry systems in parallel — one “good” and one “legacy” — for a few years to facilitate the changeover…but the bureaucracy assocaited with that would presumably be unfortunate.)
