The Spammishness of the Hartford Courant

The Spammishness of the Hartford Courant

19 September 2006 · 1 Comment

Checking my email this evening I found an unsolicited ad from courant.com

With the normal, accursed version of spam, you should never check the unsubscribe link. Doing so only provides an acknowledgement that there’s a live person at that address who at least glances at the spam, theoretically encouraging the spammers to send more. However, from legitimate operations that mistakenly think that I welcome unsolicited advertisements, I have no problem with responding by requesting to be removed from the mailing list.

So, according to my practice, I scrolled down to the end of the message and found the following notice:

You have received this communication because you are a registered member of courant.com, located at 285 Broad Street, Hartford, CT 06115. For more information on how we protect your information, please read our privacy policy.

If you do not wish to receive solicitations sent by courant.com you will have to unregister from our service. Please note that only registered users may use selected features of our site.

Hmmm…if I don’t want to be spammed by the Courant, I can’t read their articles online.

Thank heavens for BugMeNot.

The Courant is also behind the badly assembled, messy, and unmeritorious “Valu-Mail” ad circular. It is impossible to get off the mailing list. The Courant needs a consultation or 12 with a business ethicist.
