Delhi Considers Mandating Solar Power

(Via Treehugger) Dehli is having what seems to be on the surface a good
idea
:

THE Delhi Power Department has proposed making solar heating
and lighting in all commercial buildings in the Capital mandatory.[...]

According to the draft proposal, the mandatory use of solar power will
apply to all existing and new commercial buildings with an area of 250 sq
metres and above.

“What we are looking at initially is to make sure that the large
commercial establishments such as five-star hotels, banquet halls, large
kitchens and restaurants in the city switch to solar energy so that the
power consumption for these particular establishments as well as for the
city as a whole is brought down,” Mehta said.

I’ve often wondered why governments haven’t pushed such measures
before
, although I suspect the reason is in the perceived economics of
such a measure. (PV has traditionally appeared to be a pretty expensive
investment as compared to relying on grid power.)

It’s nice to see that some government officials share my nutty ideas.
