AAA Soliciting Comments on New Qualification Standards

AAA Soliciting Comments on New Qualification Standards

28 June 2006 · No Comments

If there are any actuaries reading this blog, consider this a public service
announcement.

On the CASNET mailing list sponsored by the
Casualty Actuarial Society
, in the past couple of days there has been a
bit of discussion on the new qualification standards being proposed by the
American Academy.

The primary goal of the proposed standards appears to be to update the
standards to account for Mutual Recognition, as well as to increase the
continuing ed requirements to 30 hours per year, up from 24 hours every two
years.

However, there are a few concerns about the update. The two close to my
heart are:

  • The proposed standards could be read as removing practice rights for
    some career Associates.
      and
  • One can be deemed qualified only through working “under the supervision
of” a qualified actuary, in some cases through exams… a potential problem
for actuaries at small companies without the budget to retain outside
consultants, or for actuaries working in areas where there are few, if any,
    actuaries already with expertise.

Of course, I could just be indulging in paranoia…something I have been
guilty of on occasion in the past.

However, if you have an interest, I encourage you to review the proposed
standards, available from the Academy,
and comment if you wish. Deadline for comments is end-of-day, Friday.
