Citizens Maelstrom Continues

Citizens Maelstrom Continues

Over the weekend, a wire service story ran that gives a
taste at just how politicized things are becoming in Florida over the Citizens program:

But the most vocal criticism came from Gallagher, the state’s chief financial officer, over remarks Crist made. Crist
said Citizens’ was under a grand jury investigation. Gallagher admonished him, saying a former employee is under investigation –
not the company.

He also criticized Crist, the state’s attorney general, for saying companies should be forced to offer property insurance in
Florida if they also sell auto insurance.

Gallagher said that practice would be unconstitutional and Crist ought to know it.

The practice would also lead to availability issues for auto insurance in the state, and they both officials should know it.

Come on now; even though the legislative session has ended in Tallahassee and the state is headed towards an election, surely folks
could show a little creativity in finding a solution (or at least an improvement) to the property insurance mess there, one that is
a little more viable than trying to force an artificial “fix” onto an already skittish industry.
