Mexico to Sue Over National Guard

Mexico to Sue Over National Guard

Via Donklephant comes this wire service story:

“If there is a real wave of rights abuses, if we see the National Guard starting to directly participate in detaining
people Â… we would immediately start filing lawsuits through our consulates,” Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez told a Mexico
City radio station. He did not offer further details.

If we attempt to secure our borders, we’ll be sued?

Or rather, it seems more correct to say that Mexico doesn’t want us to use military forces to secure the border.

What I’m at a loss to understand is why the distinction based on military status. One could argue that the Border Patrol is
more-or-less a military entity anyway, and there is precedent for nations’ border guards to be a distinct military
branch….including our own Coast Guard.

Perhaps we ought to go ahead and contract with some Israelis or former East Germans to build the Great Wall of Aztlán.
