Insurance Journal is running an interesting
article
on Medical Tourism today:

Many Americans choose to go overseas because they face crippling medical expenses for treatments performed in the
United States, said Peter Lindland, chief executive of Medical Nomad, a Florida-based Web site providing information for prospective
medical tourists.

Surgeries are cheaper in Third World countries where salaries and litigation expenses are lower, Lindland
said.[...]

It seems like an interesting concept to me, as well as an illustrative example to shed some light on just how expensive
health care is in the U.S.

I wonder if some health insurers ought to be looking into this sort of strategy to help reign in some costs…..

Actually, California insurers within 50 miles of the Mexican border can and do offer health plans that are hinged to care in Mexico. Insurers and HMOs are certainly looking at the phenomenon very closely and starting to move into it.

(I’ve written a book on the general subject, “Beauty from Afar” … released in June 2006.)
