From CNN:
Testing for the AIDS virus could become part of routine physical exams for adults and teens if doctors follow new
U.S. guidelines expected to be issued by this summer.
I’m perplexed by my reaction to the story. On the one hand, part of me is rolling its eyes and seeks to make some sort of comment
on yet another invasion of our privacy, and yet another frequently unnecessary test being run, generating added costs to an already
sufficiently expensive doctor’s visit.
However, a more pragmatic voice in my head asks, “what’s the harm?” After all, if part of controlling the spread of HIV is in
identifying who has or doesn’t have the virus….
Also, doesn’t it seem a shame that some in this country want to stifle public education of the more effective ways to protect one’s
self from the affliction, at the same time others are perceiving the problem as having grown to the point where everybody should be
tested?
