Sutter County Metal Detectors Too Powerful

A taxpayer advocate has complained to Sutter County supervisors that metal detectors at county buildings are so
sensitive they are being set off by underwire bras.[...]

“It is, at a minimum, for a woman, embarrassing. And at a maximum, it is sexual harassment to hold your arms outstretched while a
male officer waves a wand in front of your breasts,” Fletcher told supervisors at their meeting Tuesday.

The article goes on to mention the county defending itself by pointing to security, and the advocate pointing out that men just
don’t get it.

I’m trying really hard to refrain from making some cheeky comment one way or another here. Instead, I shall constrain myself to
wondering why, in this sad new era of heightened security, haven’t clothing manufacturers redesigned garments to not trigger metal
detectors.

One would think that given all the brainpower in the world, someone would have designed a nonmetallic variation of the underwire
bra, and could design shoes that didn’t require metal shanks for support.

It’ll serve society right if avian flu mutates into a form that can be transmitted by sock- or stocking-clad feet sharing the same
space.
