Well, who couldn’t see this one coming?
Here’s an unsurprising wire service story issued Thursday:
Fifty-one Democratic lawmakers urged President Bush on Thursday to hold an energy summit to find ways to reduce the country’s dependence on oil. The White House showed little interest in such a meeting.[...]
Bush has said the country has “an addiction” for oil that has to be overcome, and has urged development of alternative fuels. Democrats say the administration has produced little that would significantly reduce oil use.
I wrote after the State of the Union that I thought Bush’s call to reduce energy dependence was a good idea, and it is a project that the Dems should participate in, perhaps even picking up the banner and making it their own.
Well, it looks like the Democrats have heeded my wishes, at least a little. However, I’m very disappointed that the White House doesn’t seem to be interested enough in the idea any more to get any traction, other than shoring up subsidies and demand for the agricultural products of the red-state-filled heartland.
Oh well. I’m disappointed, but not overly surprised.
