According to today’s Hartford Courant there was some talk within the Connecticut GOP of nominating/endorsing Lieberman in this fall’s senate race.
Naturally, folks far over on the left side of the aisle are beside themselves, with this added fuel to the “Lieberman is a Republican in Democrats’ Clothing” meme.
For example, DailyKos writes:
Do we need any more evidence of how important Lieberman is to the Connecticut Republican Party? Lieberman provides them cover. They’d wither and die without him around.
ConnecticutLocalPolitics observes
Ned Lamont and his backers ought to be thrilled. Even the possibility of a Republican endorsement, despite Lieberman’s protestations, seems to prove their point that Lieberman isn’t a “real” Democrat quite neatly. The real loser here seems to be Diane Farrell, who compromised her stance on the Iraq War by endorsing Lieberman, only to find her opponent endorsing him a few days later.
I’ll repeat an observation I made earlier. If the GOP were serious about picking up a senate seat in Connecticut, they should be be quietly supporting Lamont in the primary, and finding a moderate GOP-er to run if Lieberman loses to Lamont.
