Cato to Congress: Butt Out!

Cato to Congress: Butt Out!

Think Tank Town has a nice article up regarding Cato’s latest message to Congress:

What has the Cato Institute’s dander up, among other things, is a hearing conducted by Chairman Joe Barton (R-Texas) of the House Energy and Commerce Committee to investigate the college football bowl process for determining the national champion.

And that’s not all that’s bugging Cato, which espouses less government involvement in everyday life.

In an editorial in the latest issue of Cato’s bi-monthly Policy Report magazine, editor David Boaz further complains that Chairman Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania) of the Senate Judiciary Committee has threatened to investigate the NFL Philadelphia Eagles’ suspension of its wide receiver Terrell Owens.

I would be upset about Congress wasting our tax dollars to investigate the operations of professional sports, but my initial reaction is actually — “well, at least this keeps them from causing real trouble.”

What? Surely I’m not the only person who’s happiest with our government when it’s deadlocked and unable to pass trivial legislation and engage in petty investigations?
