Random Statistics in the News

14 February 2006 · No Comments

(Via Huffington) Two minor news items caught my eye today as being odd little statistics:

From CNN:

Twenty-one percent of the 1,000 adults who replied to the survey conducted Thursday through Sunday said it was very likely or somewhat likely their conversations had been wiretapped, while 52 percent said it was not at all likely.

While I certainly haven’t been silent about my discomfort with the aministration’s stance on warrantless wiretaps, I don’t think the U.S. has degenerated to the point of the feds listening in on random phone calls to keep tabs on the citizens. I wonder if this is indicative of a market for tin-foil hats….

From USA Today:

At the State Department, for instance, only 10 of 34,000 employees are rated fully fluent in Arabic.

Well, at least they’ve got job security!
