At lunchtime, while running an errand, I caught a bit of Rush Limbaugh. He was all giddy that the Alito confirmation vote had taken place, and and (as expected) he was confirmed, albeit with only 58 votes.
Rush then went on to remind the audience that Roberts and Alito are the product of a GOP project started back in the Reagan administration, to get conservative lawyers groomed and up onto the Supreme Court.
If the Democrats are serious about presenting a serious long-term challenge to the GOP…I hope they have similar projects as this shift-the-SCOTUS-to-the-right project Rush mentioned, as well as similar long-term schemes cooking.
As obnoxious as I find the radical elements within the GOP, I do have to give that party credit — they have a vision, and they have the organization to move it forward. I just wish that other political groups had equivalent, effective strategies to act as a check to the goals of that one corps of pachyderms.
