Well, with my having to daytrip into Manhattan tomorrow, M and I got our
civic duty done a day early — I left work a little early, and we went down
to town hall to cast absentee ballots.
I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that I did do a party-line vote on the GOP
line. While I am disturbed at just how rabidly conservative the
national party has become, the local issue of the election is budgetary
(details over at windsorwatch.org). An honest mistake was made over a year ago,
and the town council fumbled the recovery this year. For that, I think
we ought to swap one donkey for one elephant (in the absence of a viable
Libertarian candidate) down at town hall. And the only way to try to
accomplish that (since it’s a 9 member council, and you get to vote for any
5 candidates) is to do a party-line vote.
In fairness to the town Democrats, I can see that their options are
constrained by state laws governing local funding mechanisms. But
that’s a monologue for another day.
It’ll be interesting reading about municipal election results (in addition
to the results of the California Props and the New Jersey gubernatorial
election). Maybe they’ll be a hint of changes coming in the 06
election season. Then again, thinking about how and why I
voted…maybe not.
