The media appears to be all abuzz with the long lines South Floridians are facing for petrol, ice, water, etc., as well as with the plight of tourists stranded in Mexico.
Um…true, it shouldn’t be surprising that entities like FEMA at the federal, state, and local levels haven’t yet had a chance to fully digest the lessons of Katrina (although the handling of Rita gave many folks some hope).
However, why the hell aren’t people finally realizing that there’s a reason disaster prep experts encourage people to have several days of food, water, etc. stocked up ahead of a hurricane, and to have a backup exit planned when vacationing in hurricane-prone areas during hurricane season?
Yes, I empathize with the plight of all who have been hard-hit by Wilma….but there seems to be a lack of acknowledgement that people need to take some responsibility for their own safety and well-being. But why should this surprise me in a society that sees lawsuits brought by people who spill their own coffee?
