Republican Governor Proposes Tax Increase

Rell will ask the legislature next week to push the total cigarette tax to $2.25 a pack, up 49 percent from the current $1.51 a pack approved by the legislature in 2003. That would bring the total cost of a typical pack to about $5.14.

Boy, in Connecticut we’d better hope that more people don’t quit smoking. Otherwise, how would we make up our revenue shortfalls.

Sheesh. I’m a nonsmoker, true, but something about this still brings to mind the phrase, “tyrrany of the majority”.
